Holcim cement plant holding steady for now
FLORENCE — In the last two weeks, the local outpost of cement producer Holcim (U.S.) Inc. has received three rail shipments of coal, keeping its doors open for now.
Because of booming demand for rail-freight and insufficient capacity by Union Pacific, Holcim is struggling to stockpile the preferred fuel source for its kiln, an essential tool in cement production.
Although the recent shipments help, the plant still is in a precarious position, said Rob Davies, the plant's manager.
"We are getting by, but we aren't getting the quantities we need. We aren't accumulating inventory," he said.
The most recent coal shipments, received Tuesday and Wednesday, should keep Holcim's fires burning for another week, but no other shipments have been scheduled yet, Davies said.
Two weeks ago, Davies traveled with other Holcim executives to Omaha, Neb., in an effort to encourage Union Pacific officials to make the Florence facility a priority delivery point.
The meeting was a good one, according to Looman Stingo, the company's Sr. Vice President of Logistics, but Union Pacific seemed unable to do very much to alleviate Holcim's problems.
"There's only so much they can move," Stingo said, citing the dramatic increase in demand for rail freight.
Complicating Union Pacific's position is that, in an effort to cut costs, the company recently let go rail-crew members because of a lagging economy, Stingo said.
Holcim's local plant has the ability to run their kiln off of alternative fuels such as natural gas, but for a piece of equipment that needs to reach 1,475 degrees Celsius 24-hours per day, that option is incredibly expensive, Davies said.
