Holcim 9-month profit rises 33 pct

Holcim's nine-month net profit rose by a third as firming cement prices and solid demand outweighed the effects of higher energy costs on the world's second-biggest cement maker, underpinning its upbeat outlook. 

The Swiss group said on it expected to clearly exceed its target of 8 percent internal growth for operating profit this year and forecast "substantially stronger results", helped by an improved market environment in North America. 

Nine-month net profit rose 33.4 percent to 691 million francs ($573 million), at the higher end of expectations and helped by the full takeover of Mexican unit Apasco this year. 

Sales grew 6.6 percent to 10.02 billion as house and road construction picked up on the back of a global economic rebound. 

"The results shows that the positive impact from price increases more than offsets the negative impact from rising raw material and energy prices," Bank Leu said in a note. 

Energy costs currently eat up around 9.2 percent of Holcim's revenues, CEO Akermann said. 

POSITIVE OUTLOOK 

Its operating profit margin grew to 17.8 percent in the first nine months, compared with 16.5 percent last year. 

Analysts say Holcim is better positioned than its rivals in the growth markets of Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and that it is set to benefit from an increase in construction activity in the next few years. 

Deliveries rose in all of Holcim's three segments -- cement, ready-mixed concrete and aggregates -- with Europe recording the strongest cement growth rates as building activity strengthened on the continent, with the exception of Germany. Cement demand also remained solid in North America.
