Holcim Ltd, the world's second biggest cement company, is buying a 40% stake in Ambuja Cement India Ltd, a unit of Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd, India's fourth ranked maker of the building material.
In a statement posted on its website yesterday, Holcim said it could raise its stake in Ambuja Cement India to as much as 67% later.
The company said it planned to invest US$800mil in India. It would invest US$600mil in Ambuja Cement India, which in turn would use the money to buy an additional stake in Associated Cement Cos, India's biggest cement maker by capacity.
Ambuja Cement India, which currently owns 13.8% of Associated Cement Cos, plans to raise the stake to 50.01%. It will offer Associated Cement Cos shareholders 370 rupees a share for the stake.
