Lafarge keeps 2004 target as sales beat forecasts
Lafarge (LAFP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) , the world's biggest listed cement producer, reported a forecast-beating 5.7 percent rise in 2004 sales on Thursday, driven by solid demand in key markets which underpinned its upbeat outlook.
The France-based building materials company, with operations in 75 countries, expects full-year operating profit to have grown by more than 10 percent, excluding currency fluctuations, and positive trends in its markets to continue in 2005, it said.
Lafarge, like others in the sector such as Swiss rival Holcim (HOLN.VX: Quote, Profile, Research) , has benefited in recent quarters from a pickup in construction markets, notably in North America, eastern Europe and large parts of western Europe, on the back of a global economic rebound.
Lafarge sales rose to 14.44 billion euros ($18.8 billion) in 2004 from 13.66 billion in 2003. A Reuters survey of 10 analysts had projected sales of 14.29 billion on average.
They estimate that Lafarge will show net profit of 873 million euros for 2004 against 728 million in 2003 and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of 3.1 billion euros versus 2.8 billion.
